Daylight Saving time ends Sunday 11/04 at 2:00am  ... don't forget to "fall behind" and set your clocks back 1 hour before you go to bed Saturday night!

Also, when you turn your clocks back this Saturday night, please check your smoke alarm batteries too — and if it’s been a year since you changed them, install fresh ones.

Here’s another lifesaver: there’s a date on your smoke alarms, usually located right by the battery compartment. If it’s 10 years ago or more, go buy new alarms. They’re only made to last about 10 years, and you don’t want to find out the hard way that they’re too old to operate correctly. :0(

Going to enjoy that extra hour of sleep tomorrow morning!

Many folks (especially children) incorrectly approach a dog. The above illustration shows many of the incorrect ways, which stresses the dog, often resulting in the dog biting. Please read this fun and informative poster, and learn the correct way to approach a dog so that ALL (human & doggie) enjoy the experience!

~  Puppies for Sale  ~
Author Unknown

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"
"Sure," said the farmer.

And with that he let out a whistle, "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared ... this One noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up.

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need Someone who understands."

Moral - The world is full of people who need someone who understands.

Free Pumpkin-Carving Stencils of Favorite Dog Breeds
 from Better Homes & Gardens

Let your friends and neighbors know which dog breed is best by carving a pumpkin that looks like your favorite canine.

Your dog is the best dog in the world, right? So show the world how much you care about Max or Buddy or Molly or Princess by carving a pumpkin with his or her likeness. The American Kennel Club's list of top breeds inspired this series of pumpkin-carving stencils.

How to use:

Start by cleaning out the pumpkin, scraping the flesh thinnest in the region in which you'll carve the design. Attach the pattern (enlarged on a photocopier) to the pumpkin with tape. Use a pin to make closely spaced pin pricks along the stencil lines, piercing the paper. Remove the pattern. Cut completely through solid lines (as shown on the stencil), but only peel away the skin within the dotted lines to enhance features.

By-the-way ... there are stencils for CATS too! Just  click here to download!

Enjoy!

***Please post a pic when you are done ... it would be fun to see everyone's pumpkins
(make sure to include your pet in the pic too, of course!).

Why buy 'um, when you can easily make 'um yourself?! ♥

>>> Cleo’s Pumpkin Dog Biscuits <<<

2 Eggs
1/2 cup Canned Pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie mix)
2 tablespoons Dry Milk
1/4 teaspoon Sea Salt
2 1/2 cups Brown Rice Flour *
1 teaspoon Dried Parsley (optional)

Preheat oven to 350.

In large bowl, whisk together eggs and pumpkin to smooth. Stir in dry milk, sea salt, and dried parsley (if using, optional). Add brown rice flour gradually, combining with spatula or hands to form a stiff, dry dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface (can use the brown rice flour) and if dough is still rough, briefly knead and press to combine.

Roll dough between 1/4 – 1/2″ – depending on your dog’s chew preferences, – and use biscuit or other shape cutter to punch shapes, gathering and re-rolling scraps as you go. Place shapes on cookie sheet, no greasing or paper necessary. If desired, press fork pattern on biscuits before baking, a quick up-and-down movement with fork, lightly pressing down halfway through dough.

Bake 20 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully turn biscuits over, then bake additional 20 minutes.

Allow to cool completely on rack before feeding to dog.

* Brown rice flour gives the biscuits crunch and promotes better dog digestion. Many dogs have touchy stomachs or allergies, and do not, like many people I know, tolerate wheat.

Makes up to 75 small (1″) biscuits or 50 medium biscuits.

Enjoy ...'cause I know I will! ;0)

Most everyone loves peanut butter, including our pets. So when we saw this recall notice, we thought it was important to spread the word.

The recall is due to Salmonella contamination at the Sunland Inc. processing plant in Mexico. The following peanut butter brands have been affected (the list is growing daily, so here is a link to the FDA for updates):

Archer Farms (Target), Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Late July, Heinen's, Joseph's, Natural Value, Naturally More, Open Nature, Peanut Power Butter, Serious Food, Snaclite Power, Sprouts Farmers Market, Sprout's, Sunland and Dogsbutter, among others.

So, in addition to watching out for your children and yourself, please beware when feeding peanut butter to your pets.

Salmonellosis symptoms in pets may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea (may or may not contain blood)
  • Poor appetite
  • Weight loss
  • High fever
  • Dehydration
  • Weakness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Depression
  • Lethargy
  • Miscarriage
  • Mucus in stool

If your pet is exhibiting these symptoms, please call your vet ASAP.

By-the-way, Salmonellosis is a zoonotic illness. Meaning that YOU can "catch" it from your pets! Yikes!  To avoid becoming ill yourself, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling your ill pet, and/or any of their utensils, or belongings. Bleach is the best method to kill salmonella bacteria in the environment.

UPDATE:  October 1, 2012
There have been a number of recalls related to the expanded Sunland Inc. recall of products which include peanut butter and other products made with nuts and seeds. Among those companies initiating related recalls are Chattanooga Bakery Inc., Fairytale BrowniesFalcon Trading Company/SunRidge FarmsGiant Food, disclaimer icon  Gretchen Shoebox Express, Harry and David, Jer's ChocolatesJustin's, Late July Snacks, Newman's Own Organics disclaimer icon Oregon Ice Cream Company, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and Whole Foods Market.

So, we've all had problems crate training from time to time I'm sure, but if you follow a few simple steps it can be done!

1st - Place crate(s) in desired area, for this is the area you want your dog to feel comfortable

2nd - Place blankets and bedding into the crate, if you have bedding left over you can place it on top of the crate for later use.

3rd - Leave the crate door open so that your dog can get used to the crate, do not try to force the crate onto your dog, you want this to be a positive experience, and dogs being den animals should take to the crate naturally with given time.

4th - Let the dog be, and come to check every now and then to see if any progress is being made ...

 ... and voilĂ !   shock

Permission to share this with you all was given to us by Jen, from Kaijen Pugs in Mission, BC .. .
we just love her beautiful little puggie girl, Chance! ♥

Are you looking for something for your doggies that provides some mental stimulation, is lots of fun, and keeps them hydrated ... all at the same time?

Well, we saw this the other day, and thought is was a "cool" idea!

You can buy the kit, or do-it-yourself.

All you need is an empty ice cream bucket, water, liquid chicken stock, chew toys, and treats.

Put a few items in the bucket, fill a third of the way with water, add a bit of liquid chicken stock (low sodium is best), and freeze. Once frozen, add more items and 1/3 more water/stock, and freeze again. Later, add more toys/treats and fill with water the rest of the way, and freeze one last time.

Easy-peasy, huh!?!

Suggested items/treats:
- Kong (filled with peanut butter)
- Dog Treats
- Bananas (sliced)
- Hot Dogs (pieces)
- Salmon (cooked/canned)
- Sweet Potatoes (sliced)
- Green Beans (frozen or fresh)
- Hard-boiled Eggs
- Pineapple (chunks or rings)
- Apples (sliced, with NO core)
- Peas (frozen or fresh)

Of course, this will be very messy as it melts, so make sure to use as an OUTSIDE toy.

I hope Mom puts one of these in the doggie pool! ;o)
